Fast Break: Jules Erving

Fast Break: Jules Erving

With nine newcomers on this year's Cal Men's Basketball roster, there are plenty of fresh faces to get to know among the Golden Bears. Each week leading up to Pac-12 play, the Fast Break is bringing five key facts about a Cal newcomer to CalBears.com. Next up in the series is Atlanta, Georgia native Jules Erving, who doesn't *just* share a famous last name with an NBA legend.

Previous Fast Break spotlights: Paris Austin and Jacob Orender

1. Basketball Influences

Erving's father Julius -- better known as Dr. J -- played 16 seasons between the ABA and NBA, winning four MVP awards and an NBA title with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1983. Aside from his basketball lineage, Erving's favorite athlete is LeBron James, while the player he strives to emulate on the court is Draymond Green.

"My favorite athlete is LeBron James because of the impact he has not only on the game but outside of the game, so I look up to him as a role model," Erving said. "I also like Draymond Green because he plays so well on both ends of the court. I try to play my best on defense and offense, so I try to relate my game as much as I can to him."

2. Tiger, Tiger Woods

Outside of basketball, Erving enjoys playing golf -- a hobby he cultivated with his dad.

"I like to play golf a lot. My Dad is really into it and plays almost every day, so it's something I got really into when I was about 4 years old and I've been playing since," Erving said.

3. Como Se Dice?

Erving is fluent in Spanish and has spoken it since a young age because of his mother Dorys' influence.

"I speak Spanish fluently because my Mom is from South America [Honduras] and it's actually one of my first languages," Erving said.

4. OBJ Influence:

Erving's unique hairstyle is influenced by NFL standout Odell Beckham Jr., and he's the celebrity that he would like to meet most.

"I'd like to meet Odell Beckham Jr. so I could talk to him about how he does his hair," Erving said. "My hair used to look a lot more like his. It used to be really long and blonde but I cut it."

5. Renaissance Man

Aside from basketball skills, Erving would like to master the art of drawing.

"I'm big into art," Erving said. "This started from a really young age and then in high school. I took a lot of 3-D art, drawing, painting classes and stuff like that, so I've always been into it."
