With nine newcomers on this year's Cal Men's Basketball roster, there are plenty of fresh faces to get to know among the Golden Bears. Each week leading up to Pac-12 play, the Fast Break is bringing five key facts about a Cal newcomer to CalBears.com. Next up in the series is Jacksonville, Fla. native Jacob Orender, who came to Berkeley by way of Lafayette College.

1. Basketball Roots

Orender's mother, Donna, played basketball professionally and worked in the WNBA. She played in the Women's Pro Basketball League (WBL) for the New York Stars, New Jersey Gems and Chicago Hustle before becoming the second president of the WNBA.

"My mom played professional basketball and she also worked for the WNBA, so she always tried to instill a passion for basketball from a young age," Orender said. "I started playing at 5 or 6 in local YMCA leagues."

2. Surf's Up!

His biggest off-the-court hobby is surfing.

"Outside of basketball, I really enjoy surfing and in Jacksonville it's a big thing to do," he said. "I actually did it all throughout middle school and high school".

3. CP3 Admiration

Orender is a fan of All-Star point guard Chris Paul's game.

"I watch his highlights all the time, and on-and-off the court he's a great example of how you should conduct yourself," Orender said. "I really like his style of play being a 6-foot guard who's not overly athletic. It's something that I try to emulate."

4. Major Options

Growing up in Florida, it's no surprise that one of Orender's favorite subjects in Marine Biology. Still, with the prestigious Haas School of Business within arm's reach, Orender is exploring his other options.

"My favorite subject of all time is Marine Biology, but now I really like Business and Economics," he said. "I like how there is always a definitive answer, when one thing changes how it affects another. Business is very applicable to everything."

5. The Collector

Speaking of marine biology, Orender's fascination with the ocean also extends to his hobby: he's a shark tooth collector

"My mom and I actually have a very extensive shark tooth collection," he said. "That's a pretty cool thing that we do together."
