STANFORD – The No. 20 California softball team came up short in game one of the DeMarini Invitational, falling to No. 5 Georgia, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium, as the Golden Bears' 14-game win streak came to an end.
The Bears (16-2) got two RBI from
Lagi Quiroga and a pair of hits off the bat of
Elon Butler in the loss. The Bulldogs (14-1) were led by two hits and two RBI from Sydney Chambley.
Georgia jumped on the board early, scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first off of starter
Randi Roelling. The Bears battled back right away, scoring in another answer inning.
Acacia Anders and Butler started the frame with singles and advanced to scoring position on a
Tianna Bell sacrifice bunt, before a Quiroga RBI groundout plated the first run.
Trailing 3-1 in the third, the Bulldogs added another run on an RBI groundout back to Roelling. Cal fought back right away again, however, getting a run back on Quiroga's second RBI of the day, with a double to score Anders and make the score 4-2.
The Bears had a chance to get closer in the sixth with two runners in scoring position, but a groundout ended the threat and kept it a two-run game. Cal couldn't get anything going in the seventh as the Bears fell to the Bulldogs.
