Saponjic Helps Serbia Win European Title

Aleksa Saponjic, who will be a sophomore for the Golden Bears next fall after an outstanding freshman campaign at Cal, helped his native Serbia win the gold medal at the Jan. 16-29 European Championship Sunday (Jan. 29) with a 9-8 win over Montenegro at Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Aleksa Saponjic, who was a top player for the Golden Bears as a freshman this past fall, scored a goal for his native Serbia today (Jan. 27) in the semifinal match against Italy at the prestigious European Championship, Jan. 16-29 in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Eight Bears Selected MPSF All-Academic

The 2011 Cal men's water polo team had eight players recognized by the MPSF as members of the 2011 All-Academic Team - seniors Charlie Steffens and Wil Toppen, junior Marin Balarin, sophomores Giacomo Cupido, Hunter Gettelfinger and Perry Short, and redshirt freshmen Matt Russell and Blake Kelly.

Aleksa Saponjic, who as a freshman was third on the 2011 Cal men's water polo team in scoring with 30 goals in 22 matches and tallied 22 assists and 18 steals, has been selected to compete for Serbia at the prestigious European Championship.
