LONG BEACH, Calif. – The California softball team picked up its fourth-straight win behind another strong outing in the circle and clutch hitting to close out the Wilson Invitational on Sunday with a 4-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
Annabel Teperson recorded her first-career shutout and
Hope Alley had two RBI for the Bears (9-2).
Scoreless heading to the third, Teperson faced her first tough situation of the day with runners in scoring and two down after a pair of singles. She got out of the jam with a strikeout, getting ULM's best hitter to swing and miss after an eight pitch at-bat.
The Bears broke through first in the home half of the third thanks to a timely hit from
Tianna Bell. Cal had runners at first and second with two outs after
Kennedy Thomas reached on a fielder's choice and
Kacey Zobac drew a walk, before Bell laced a pitch up the middle to bring around Thomas for a 1-0 lead.
Teperson kept it rolling in the circle through the visitor fifth, allowing just four hits with no walks, keeping ULM off balance with a variety of pitches. As they've done often early in the season, Cal looked for some insurance runs in the sixth and it did just that.
Acacia Anders singled with one out and after
D'Asha Saiki walked to load the bases, Alley came up with the clutch hit, a 2-run single up the middle to give the Bears a three-run lead. Cal wasn't done as
Mika Lee got the job done with an RBI groundout to make it 4-0.
Teperson finished the job in the seventh for her third-career complete game, allowing just the four hits with one walk for her second win of the season.
