Bears Split Final Day Of Easton Classic

Cal Clobbers Utah State In Third Run-Rule Victory Of Opening Weekend

FULLERTON, Calif. – The California softball team split its final two games of the Easton classic on Sunday at Anderson Family Field, earning a third run-rule victory of opening weekend against Utah State before falling to Cal State Fullerton in the finale.

The Bears (5-1) scored 12 runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 13-0 win over Utah State and got a 2-run home run from Sophie Medellin against the Titans, but came up short, 6-2.

Game 1 – Cal 13, Utah State 0 (5)
Haylei Archer got the start in the circle for the Bears and held Utah State to just two walks through the first two frames until the bats got going. Cal got on the board first in the third after Sona Halajian reached on an error and scored on a Makena Smith line drive up the middle.

Archer continued to have it working through the fourth as Utah State finally got its first hit, a bunt single, but that was it for the Aggies offensively heading into the fifth.

Cal's bats woke up in the fifth after two walks and a hit by pitch to start the frame. Smith added to the lead with a 2-run single up the middle and Kacey Zobac went the other way for a 3-run home run, her first of the year, to make it 6-0 Golden Bears.

Halajian followed with a 2-run double to right and the Bears sent nine more batters to the plate in the inning (20 total) on the way to their third run-rule victory of the weekend.

Game 2 – Cal State Fullerton 6, Cal 2
Scoreless through two, the Titans struck first in the third. After a leadoff home run, a 2-run double made it 3-0 in favor of CSUF. The home team took advantage of a passed ball for a run and another RBI double was the last batter for Halajian as the Bears went to Anna Reimers out of the bullpen.

Alexa Neil recorded an RBI single for Fullerton's sixth run of the inning and it was 6-0 after three complete. Looking to chip away, the Bears got a couple back in the fourth. Halajian singled and Medellin made it a four-run ballgame with a 2-run shot over the fence in left center, her second of the weekend against the Titans.

Cal got another runner in scoring position in the fifth, but she was stranded at third and the last five Bears were retired in order.
