22 Bears Named MPSF Scholar-Athletes
BERKELEY – A total of 22 student-athletes – 11 men and 11 women – have been chosen as MPSF Scholar-Athletes for the 2017 indoor track & field season.
To earn a spot on the team, student-athletes must have at least a 3.0 GPA, be at least a sophomore academically and have competed in at least 50 percent of a team's competitions during the year.
The men's squad is led by sophomore
Tyler Brendel, an undeclared major who has a 3.91 GPA, and includes NCAA Championships qualifiers and middle-distance runners
Garrett Corcoran, a junior mechanical engineering major with a 3.66 GPA, and senior
Thomas Joyce, who has a 3.58 GPA in economics. Corcoran and Joyce were also part of the Bears' distance medley relay that captured the conference title, while Brendel was third in the heptathlon.
Among the Cal women, sophomore
Lauren Martinez (3.38 GPA, undeclared) was the MPSF runner-up in the pole vault, and junior
Bethan Knights, with a 3.33 GPA (undeclared), was a 2016 NCAA indoor qualifier in the 3000 meters.
