No. 8 Cal Upset by No. 11 Iowa, Mah Wins All-Around

BERKELEY – Despite amassing nearly a seven point lead to open the meet and notching four event leaders, eighth-ranked California was unable to hold off No. 11 Iowa on Monday night to suffer a 399.900-396.550 upset, the second home loss of the season.
The Bears were led by Aaron Mah, who won the all-around competition (80.550) taking the floor (14.400) and high bar (14.000), while Yordan Aleksandrov who finished third in the all-around (78.900) won the rings (13.900) and parallel bar (14.000).
The Golden Bears scored 68.850 on floor during the opening rotation ahead of the Hawkeyes' 61.900 on the pommel horse, but that gap was quickly closed after Cal was unable to make headway on the pommel horse scoring a 59.800.
On their fourth and best rotation, the Bears' 69.850 performance on vault closed the gap, but still was shy of the 71.450 posted by Iowa on the apparatus. Iowa's vault score was the highest event total of the night.
Next up, the Cal men face No. 2 Stanford, No. 7 Nebraska and No. 14 Arizona State in their first home quad of the season on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. for alumni weekend. The meet will broadcast live on the Pac-12 network at 7:30 p.m. The team will also commemorate the 20 year anniversary of the 1997 NCAA championship team.
