BERKELEY – California men's gymnastics head coach Brett McClure will step down from his role with the program at the end of the 2017 NCAA season after accepting a new position as high performance director for USA Gymnastics.
 
McClure's responsibilities will include working with elite athletes, elite coaches and the Men's Program Committee to develop and implement an international competition plan for the junior and senior national teams for 2020 and beyond. A silver medalist at the 2004 Olympics, McClure will be based in Colorado Springs, Colo.
 
"I'd like to congratulate Brett on his new position as High Performance Director for USA Gymnastics," Director of Athletics Mike Williams said. "This is a tremendous opportunity for him to have a significant role at the national level. Over the past four years leading our men's gymnastics program, Brett has been an engaged and dedicated coach who has helped our student-athlete strive for excellence both in competition and in the classroom. We look forward to Brett leading our team through the rest of this season and following his new career once he begins with USA Gymnastics."
 
McClure started his career at Cal in June 2013 after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Stanford. In his time with the Bears, McClure coached Olympian Ryan Patterson (South Africa) and nine individuals to NCAA top-10 finishes. As a team, Cal finished sixth in the country in both 2015 and '16.
 
"Cal men's gymnastics, UC Berkeley, alumni and supporters have supported every effort I've made to improve not only the program, but also men's collegiate gymnastics, with the utmost trust, confidence and passion," said McClure, who officially starts with USA Gymnastics on May 1. "For that, I will be forever thankful. I look forward to continue helping NCAA gymnastics programs from my new position.
 
"I am humbled and honored for this opportunity to work with USA Gymnastics," he continued. "Gymnastics has been my entire life, and it is a dream come true to be able to give back to the program that has given me endless opportunities. I look forward to stepping into this new role following the conclusion of the NCAA season.
 
The eighth-ranked Bears, currently 6-5, will have their next outing against 11th-ranked Michigan on Feb. 25.
 
"We are extremely thrilled we have the next two weeks to prepare for the 'five-up, five-count' format," McClure said. "The guys are hungry to increase our hit percentages and stick percentages beginning the second half of the season in Michigan. This is a really talented group of guys, and it's been an honor to work with them and help them develop at this level. I know they will continue the legacy of hard work and beautiful gymnastics Cal is known for. I'm really happy that I can say I was a part of their growth and that of the program."
