Bears Finish Third in Quad

BERKELEY – California faced a loaded field in the Pac-12 Invitational hosting No.2 Stanford, No.7 Nebraska and No.14 Arizona State on Saturday in its first home quad.
Despite leading in the first rotation, the eighth-ranked Golden Bears (404.050) completed the meet in third place, surpassing Arizona State (387.700), but fell to Nebraska (408.800) and Stanford (422.250), who won the meet. This is the Bears third loss at home this season.
The Bears were led by Aaron Mah, who placed second in the all-around competition (81.500). Mah placed second on floor with a 14.700 while Yordan Aleksandrov took the parallel bar title with a 14.550.
The Golden Bears opened the night on floor, scoring a season high 70.350 while No. 14 Arizona State scored 62.500 on pommel horse, No. 2 Stanford tallied 70.000 on parallel bars and No.7 Nebraska started off with 66.300 on the high bar.
In their second rotation, Bears scored a 60.900, dropping their .35 lead they accumulated in the first rotation. Meanwhile, Arizona State scored 62.250 on rings, Nebraska went for 71.450 on the floor and Stanford scored 70.250 on the high bar. Bears moved from first to third place after just two rotations.
On their fourth and best rotation, the Bears' scored a 70.800 on the vault, setting another season-high score on Saturday. Cal's performance on vault closed the gap between them and Nebraska, but the Cornhusker's 68.400 on rings kept them in second place.
Next up, the Cal men will compete in the Winter Cup Classic Feb. 16-18 in Las Vegas, Nev. Performances at the 2017 Winter Cup will determine 15 members of the 2017 U.S. Men's National Team through the 2017 P&G Gymnastics Championships, Aug. 17-20, in Anaheim, Calif.
