Cal-Wofford Quotes

California Head Coach Wyking Jones

General thoughts on the win:
"Really good second half. We went into the locker room as a staff and made a couple of adjustments to the press. Obviously, we didn't let Fletcher touch the ball as much in the second half. He really shot the ball well in the first half. We focused on not even letting him [Fletcher] catch. That was the game plan. We played a little bit more zone in the second half. We felt like in the first half they took advantage of us a little bit against man with running Fletcher off staggers, and he has such a quick release, so it was tough for our guys. I'm very happy with our second half tonight."

On the team's adjustments with the zone defense in the second-half:
"Don't let Fletcher catch the ball. Make them beat us in the paint, when the guy catches at the high-post make him score as opposed to catch it in the high-post and then kick out to shooters. Instead of dinging on their high-post catch, we just fanned out to their shooters."

On Darius McNeill's play tonight:
"I saw a lot of confidence in him tonight. He shot the ball well. The best thing about how he played tonight is he played in the context of our offense. He didn't try to do too much and that's indicative of his shooting. You see his stats, 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-7 from three. We continued to attack them inside-out and he did a really good job of shooting on kickouts. I've always told Darius, 'You're a freshman man -- if you score it's a bonus, just do a great job of running the team and getting your teammates involved.' He did a really good job tonight of playing under control, playing with a lot of confidence and even on the defensive end he was active and got his hands on a lot of balls. He had a really nice game tonight."

On team's effective offense tonight:
"When you see Kingsley catch the ball in the high-post and he's being aggressive and seeking out a good shot, that's always going to be a good sign for us because you have all seen in the past when he kind of defers to his teammates. Tonight he was being aggressive, so any time you see him being really aggressive in the post, I feel good in general because I know we are getting good looks, he is down therer working and he's going to put pressure on the other team's bigs."

California Forward Marcus Lee

On changes from the first half:
"One thing we are really focusing on as a team is coming out of the gate strong. Our first couple of games, we kind of lollygagged and had to play catch-up, but we'd much rather play with the lead than trying to always catch up. Today was one of our best talking games throughout the whole game."

On Cal's rebounding dominance:
"We knew that their two bigs were really great at attacking the glass and rebounding. Before the game, when we were watching film, me and King talked about how we needed to focus on boxing out today and attacking the rebounds."

On turnovers:
"With younger players, we'd rather them have early mistakes. With them having a fast pace starting out, turnovers will happen. We will work on eliminating them as we go."

On Wofford:
"They are an amazing team, and really know how to play well together. But something we really focus on is being able to play our game and go all night. As soon as we tire them out, we're going to keep going. As other teams start getting tired, keep going through our press over and over, we are able to keep being energetic and play hard."

California Guard Darius McNeill

On change from first to second half defense:
"When we got into halftime, Coach really got on us to lock in on them, close out on shooters and wherever you go, keep talking."

On confidence out of the gate:
"The past couple of games, I've been really nervous. Today, Coach just kept telling me to play my game, and play through the system and be really aggressive, really let the game come to me. I took that advice and good things happened today."

On the change in offense:
"After our first loss, Coach said that we are a better team when we play inside and outside. Just play through Marcus and King and we'll be fine."

Wofford Head Coach Mike Young

On Cal's play:
"I thought Coach Jones did some things that bothered us. He does a really nice job of utilizing their size with Okoroh and Lee. We were fortunate enough to have a couple fouls on Lee in the first half. No. 1 (Darius McNeill) has not shot the ball like he did there, made three three's in the first half, really surprised us there. He's (Coach Jones) has a great player there in Don Coleman, and you put those two men in the frontcourt, and that's a formidable bunch. I think they've played much better in their past two games than in their home opener, but I'm impressed with Coach Jones and what he's doing with this Bears team."
