On taking key charge in final seconds of game
"When a guy gets beat, making sure we get out of the restricted zone—we practice that every week in practice. I wanted to make sure I got out of the zone and took it."
Â
On using zone defense
"We practice the zone in practice so we never know when he's going to go to it, but the past few games he's been switching defenses a lot to keep the team we're playing off balance. It helped us tonight, especially when they go small, and it's good to keep switching to keep the team off balance."
Â
On slow starts
"I think a lot of it is offensively that we started off the game with a lot of turnovers. We had six turnovers before the under-12 minute timeout, which is unacceptable. We're getting stops but not scoring, and it's only putting us up by three or five and the next thing you know they start scoring and then got out to a eight or nine-point lead. We need to take care of the ball, shoot the right shots instead of quick shots, and we need to be a lot more efficient on offense. Defensively, we seem to be starting out okay. We got stops early in the game, but we weren't scoring efficiently."

Â
On Jabari Bird's 1000th point
"He's a big time player, so at the end of the day we expect him to step up. At the beginning of the game, I didn't really think of the 1000
th point. I didn't think he was really pressing for it. As soon as he made that shot, I think somebody said it and I heard it, so really congratulations to Jabari. He made it big at the end of the game, scoring big points and getting his 1000
th point at the end of the game.
Â
On finding ways to win
"I think tonight, free throws were really what hurt us. We missed a lot of free throws, but I thought we made plays defensively that took certain guys away and we did a good job of exploiting matchups on the other end as well. In the end, a win is a win.
Â
On defending Hawkinson
"He's good down low, but he can score at all three levels. He is definitely a competitor, so we took it personally tonight trying to slow him down a little bit. I'm not sure what he finished with, but when you have that reputation, you should know our eyes are going to be on you. He did a good job continuing to fight, but we're happy we got this one done."

Â
Opening statement
Â
"I thought for this team to go through the horrendous travel we had to go through to get down here, leaving campus at 7:30 on Wednesday and spending six, seven hours in Spokane, I thought it knocked us out-of-whack for Stanford. Stanford played a tremendous game, I don't know if we would've beat them anyway with how hard they battled, but the key thing on this trip is the character we displayed to bounce back. Less than 36 hours after going through what we went through at Stanford, I thought my guys did a teriffic job and that always spells to one thing and that's character of this basketball team."
Â
On limiting Cal's offensive rebounds
Â
"One of the things we talked about -- they are so big and they do grab offensive rebounds but if you do block them out they have a tendency to reach and those certainly were helpful situations for us and we did a good job of keeping them off the boards. I thought defensively our game plan was really really good. We had them on lockdown. Getting in foul trouble hurt us because I thought they had a hard time guarding us in the first half so we could spread the floor."
Â
On the dynamics of the team
Â
"When I talk about this team having growth potential, it has Robert Franks and Viont'e Daniels because those two are outstanding shooters. When they have their confidence, they allow you to spread the floor and they can shoot, inside or outside, just really good players, it's all confidence with them"
Â
On Cal's effective defense
Â
"I thought Viont'e was on his game, Charles made a couple mistakes early on, Viont'e got into a great rhythm and we just played him this game."
