Christine Alftin had four clutch kills in the deciding fifth set and junior middle blocker
Jenelle Jordan set her career-high in kills for the fourth straight match to start the season, and the Cal volleyball team pulled out a 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-11 victory over Northeastern on Saturday morning at the LBSU/UC Irvine Mizuno Invitational.
Alftin began the fifth set with a kill and later registered back-to-back kills to give the Bears (3-1) a 9-6 lead. Her last kill brought Cal to match point at 14-10.
Jordan finished with 18 kills at a .351 hitting percentage and also had five blocks. She began the season by tying her career high with 11 kills against Southern Utah and since has had 12 kills against UC Riverside, 16 against Long Beach State and 18 against Northeastern. Jordan leads the Bears with a .480 hitting percentage and is averaging 3.47 kills per set.
Alftin had 13 kills, 10 digs and two aces while freshman opposite hitter
Bailee Huizenga also had 13 kills and six blocks. Sophomore middle blocker
Belen Castillo added 11 kills at a .364 hitting percentage with six blocks.
Senior setter
Alyssa Jensen dished out 64 assists – two short of her career-high – while reeling off three aces. Senior libero
Maddy Kerr had 17 digs.
The Bears continue play at the LBSU/UC Irvine Mizuno Invitational later Saturday night, as Cal plays UC Irvine at 7 p.m.
