Cal-San Diego State Postgame Quotes

California head coach Cuonzo Martin

Opening Statement...

"Credit San Diego State for getting a win, I thought they did a great job setting a tone early. Taking away our options offensively getting in our passing lanes, forcing us to make 1 on 1 plays, and I thought they did a good job capitalizing on quick shots, fast shots, shots that we didn't eventually want in the offense, and turn them into baskets for themselves. So give those guys a lot of credit I thought they did a good job battling until the end."

On constant quick shots throughout the game...

"Part of that, you have to give them credit when you're forcing guys to do things they don't want to do, because that's what we try to do defensively. We had some guys shooting shots that are uncharacteristic of things they normally do and that's to the defense's advantage and I thought they did a great job of that instead of us, you know moving the ball, being strong with the ball, making the right decision with the ball, and not allowing the defense to dictate what we do with the ball. I thought they did a great job of that in the first half."

On lack of fast break points...

"Yes, you have to get out and go. Especially with a guy like Charlie you have to get out and speed them up, force those guys to make plays, and if you don't have anything then of course you have to allow Ivan, Kameron, and Kingsley to have opportunities to get the ball and make plays and rebound the basketball."

On playing quality non-conference opponents early in the season...

"Well it's always good. That's what I said to our guys, is it's always great. Of course you want to win the game but it's great for our guys to learn from it. The value is in learning and understanding who we are as a team but also in your role as a ball player, because often times as a player you want to do certain things, you want to have a certain role, but these games kind of reveal certain things about you as an individual and also about you as a team, so it can help you moving forward."

On working more with the offense or defense for upcoming games...

"Oh boy, we've got a lot to work on but that's the beautiful thing, I think this team has a chance to be special. There's a lot of things we need to work on, and Ivan getting reps under his belt in practice because he hasn't been a part of practice so now to see him, obviously you look at the numbers, as well as he played, I was surprised really because he didn't have the reps under his belt. Ivan and Charlie haven't played a lot together, Ivan and Grant haven't played a lot together so this is good for us from the standpoint of going though it. Of course it's tough when you lose a game but learning from it, now we go back to the drawing board and make the necessary adjustments."

Sophomore Forward Ivan Rabb

On disappointment of dropping his first game back...

"Yeah, I think the first half, we just have to do a better job of, first off taking care of the ball, and like coach said we can't let teams force us into quick shots that we don't normally take. Obviously, the numbers I had tonight don't mean anything if we didn't win. We had a lot of positives but at the end of the day we knew that this team will capitalize off turnovers and I think we had 15 or 16 tonight. You won't beat a lot of teams with that many turnovers so we have to get that together."

On what it's like to play with Charlie...

"First off, he's very natural with the ball in his hands, so I know that sometimes I can slip, and sometimes I can actually set the real screen and he'll make a play. I told him that I trust him to shoot the 3 or shoot the pull up, whatever you have to do. Or get me the ball or get other guys involved as well but I feel that we play off each other really well and I feel that's something we should go to more often, in the first half to get the ball moving a little bit."

Freshman guard Charlie Moore

On coming off a 38 point performance...

"I would say that wasn't what I was looking for. It actually wasn't what I was looking for last game. I just go with the flow of the game and have my teammates assert on the offensive end and the defensive end, so whatever is in the flow of the game is how I try to go."
