Goransson Edged In Berkeley Futures Final

BERKELEY – Just as California's Andre Goransson wound up the $25,000 Berkeley Futures at the Hellman Tennis Complex over the weekend, his teammates began playing across the San Francisco Bay at what will be his next destination.

Goransson, who lost in Saturday's doubles final with partner Sem Verbeek, had another shot at a title in the USTA Pro Circuit event when he played in the main draw singles final on Sunday.

The Golden Bear senior faced pro Marcos Giron – the former UCLA star – in the last match of the tournament on his home courts, and the efficient Swede came out strong in winning the first set, 7-5. While Goransson served up just one of his six aces in the first set, the veteran Bear also scored 18 points off his first serve, converted 94 percent of his second serves (15 of 16) and won two of three break points in the first stanza.

The pendulum began to swing the other way in the second set despite a 4-1 advantage for Goransson in aces and despite two double faults for Giron to just one for the fourth-year Bear. The one-time Bruin converted two of three break points – Goransson won two of five – and eventually prevailed, 7-5, in the tiebreaker to claim the set at 7-6(5).

While the finalists each completed about 70 percent of their serves in the third set, Giron had a 2-1 edge in breaks, including one in the clinching game, and won the final, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4.

BURLINGAME, Calif. – Over the weekend, some of Goransson's teammates took part in qualifying singles in the $25,000 Burlingame Futures USTA Pro Circuit tournament indoors at the Broadway Tennis Center, with Cal senior Florian Lakat earning his way into the main draw.

Lakat will join Goransson, junior Billy Griffith and sophomore Gunther Matta in main draw singles starting Tuesday after posting two victories at the BTC. The Paris, France, native – who reached the singles quarterfinals in the Berkeley Futures – defeated the 12th-seeded Isaiah Strode, 6-2, 6-2, and then beat fifth-seeded Sebastian Hawken, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to advance as one of eight qualifiers.
