BERKELEY – The California baseball team used eight pitchers who combined to hold Pacific to one run over seven innings as the Golden Bears won 17-1 on Tuesday evening at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Â
Cal (16-10) scored 17 runs on 12 hits, including a pair of long home runs from
Peyton Schulze and
Max Handron. Meanwhile, the pitching staff was overpowering, holding their opponents to one hit and a run over seven full. The home run from Schulze was his fifth of the year and his second grand slam of the season. Cal has now hit four grand slams this season.
Â
Andres Galan (2-1) got the win. He pitched four solid innings, allowing a hit a run, with three walks and four strikeouts.
Logan Piper,
Quinn Larson,
Kaden Taque,
Jake Guardiancic,
Tucker Bougie,
Connor Sullivan, and
Tyler Stasiowski went the final three innings and did not allow a hit. Taque made his collegiate debut in the sixth, he retired the only two batters he faced.
Â
The Bears scored six runs on three hits and batted through the order in the bottom of the first. The big hits in the frame were RBI singles from
Caleb Lomavita, and
Matthew Thomas, and a bases-clearing double with two outs from
Alec Ritch.
Â
Cal blew it open in the third. Relief pitcher David Andrus got two quick outs but could not get the crucial third out. A walk and back-to-back hit batters loaded the bases for Schulze who smashed a first-pitch breaking ball over the left field fence to clear the bases.
Â
Handron put the finishing touches on the fireworks, hitting a two-run home run down the left field line to make it 17-1.
Â
The loss went to starter Jacob Smith (0-1). All four batters he faced would score in the bottom of the first. He was pulled without recording an out.
Â
Pacific (5-23) scored their run in the top of the third. A hit a walk and a wild pitch put runners at second and third with one out for Rylan Evans who hit a ground ball to first for the 3-1 putout that allowed Andre Vidal to score from third.
Â
Jarren Advincula had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Â
Â
Cal returns to action on Friday when Arizona comes to Stu Gordon Stadium for a three-game series. Friday's game is scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch and will be streamed on the Cal Live Stream.
