BERKELEY – Lagi Quiroga hit a pair of home runs and
Annabel Teperson went five strong innings in the circle to lead the No. 15 California softball team to a 7-1 win over Saint Mary's on Tuesday at Levine-Fricke Field.
Acacia Anders also went deep for the Golden Bears (20-2), who are off to their best start since opening the 2015 campaign 21-1.
Quiroga kept her hot streak going after she hit .636 in five games last week, crushing a solo shot in the bottom of the first off of Saint Mary's starter, Mia Nishikawa. Anders followed one batter later, hitting a solo bomb of her own to make it 2-0 after one inning.
Teperson was able to keep the Gael lineup off balance with her off speed pitches, scattering base hits before the Bears added to the lead in the third. Quiroga hit her sixth homer of the season, another solo blast and
Tianna Bell came through with an RBI on a fielder's choice as Cal led it, 4-1.
Ryann Orange came on to replace Teperson in the sixth, closing the book on the junior from Novato after five innings as she allowed just one unearned run on six hits. The Bears added two more runs in the home fifth on an
Elon Butler RBI single and an
Alyssa Herrera RBI fielder's choice.
Tatum Anzaldo swiped home on a double steal in the sixth and Orange set the Gaels down in the seventh as Cal took the win.
