BERKELEY - The California field hockey team (8-6, 4-1 NorPac) broke away in the second period, scoring five goals to defeat Pacific (5-7, 3-0 NorPac) 6-1, Saturday afternoon in Berkeley.
Both teams kept it close in the first period; each scored one goal. Junior forward Valentina Godfrid scored her first goal of the day off a pass from senior midfielder Chilly Banuelos. Twelve minutes later, Pacific stayed in the hunt with Vianney Campos scoring the Tigers' lone goal.
Cal opened the second period with three quick goals and a penalty shot. Senior forward Alexandra Harkins scored her first goal of the season a minute into the last period; Godfrid was credited with the assist. Seven minutes following Harkins' goal senior forward Teela Crosthwaite scored off another Godfrid pass. Two minutes after Crosthwaite's goal, Godfrid picked up a penalty shot opportunity. She scored off the shot, with a high flick into the net.
Godfrid then capped off her scoring spree connecting on a penalty corner; senior backfielder Jenna Long and Banuelos were credited with the assist. With this goal, Godfrid ties the amount of goals she scored in the 2004 season (21). Crosthwaite scored the Bears' last goal in the final four minutes of play.
Cal out shot the Tigers 23-4, the Bears had 15 shot attempts alone in the second period. For Cal defensively, goalkeeper Veronica Sykes collected two saves in the game, one in each period.
The Bears return to action next Sunday, Oct. 16 against Longwood in Berkeley. Game time at Maxwell Family Field is set for a 1:00 p.m. (PDT).
