BERKELEY - Nine California women's water polo student-athletes earned recognition for their academic performances as members of the 2008 Academic All-America team, as announced Tuesday by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches. To be eligible for Academic All-America accolades, an athlete must have a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA, must be at least a sophomore academically, and must have been an active participant on the team.
Sophomores Erika Hanson (political science), Darby Anderson (Spanish), freshman Laura Wood (undeclared) and Julie Oreglia (political science) all earned superior level honors for having GPAs between 3.41-3.70. Sophomores Camille Hewko (history of art), Erin Scully (mass communications), Remy Champion and juniors Melissa Wheeler (rhetoric) and Paige Lorenz (American studies) were placed on the excellent list with GPAs ranging from 3.20-3.40. Wheeler, Lorenz, Anderson, Oreglia, Champion, Hewko and Scully were also placed on the 2008 All-MPSF Academic team.
The 2008 Cal women's water polo squad, in its third year under former Olympic men's water polo coach Richard Corso, finished 18-11 overall and 6-6 in the MPSF.
