BERKELEY - Twelve California women's water polo student-athletes earned recognition for their academic performances as members of the 2009 All-MPSF Academic team, as announced Friday by conference executive director Al Beaird. Cal's 12 selections on the academic recognition squad were the most by any MPSF member.
Seniors Lauren Burke (art) and Paige Lorenz (American studies); juniors Remy Champion (political economy of industrialized societies), Erika Hanson (political science), Julie Oreglia (political science), Stephanie Schnugg (art), Camille Hewko (history of art) and Erin Scully (mass communications); sophomore Coral Kemp (undeclared); as well as redshirt freshmen Stephanie Peckham (undeclared) and Georgi Cappelletti (undeclared) were all honored by the MPSF. To be eligible for MPSF All-Academic accolades, an athlete must have a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA, must be at least a sophomore academically, and must have competed in 50 percent or more of a team's matches.
The 2009 Cal women's water polo squad, in its fourth year under former Olympic men's water polo coach Richard Corso, finished the season 31-8 overall, which is the highest number of wins ever and ties the highest winning percentage.
