BERKELEY, CALIF. - The University of California women's water polo program has signed high school standout Erin Scully to a national letter of intent, it was announced today by head coach Richard Corso.
Scully, a 5-7 driver from Los Alamitos High School, scored 119 goals this season as a senior. She is a two-time first-team All-Sunset League selection, and this year was Sunset League MVP, Orange County second-team, first-team All-CIF Division I and Long Beach Press Telegram Dream Team MVP. Scully is a two-year member of the SOPAC zone team as well.
"Erin has been playing at a very high level ever since she was 10," said Corso. "She has great skills, a great feel for the game and an excellent work ethic. She is definitely the type of player we want, and need, at Cal."
Scully already has some connections to Cal as her father, Steve, was a graduate assistant for the Fresno State football team when the Golden Bears' head football coach, Jeff Tedford, was a quarterback for the Bulldogs in the early `80s.
Scully joins an outstanding Cal women's water polo recruiting class that had signed in early November - Darby Anderson, Meghan Corso, Camille Hewko and Grace Reynolds.
The 2006 Cal women's water polo squad, in its first season under Corso, finished 18-9 overall and a school-record 9-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation league play. The Bears were also an impressive 8-1 at home, losing only to No. 1-ranked USC, 7-5. Cal was fifth in the MPSF Tournament, defeating Pacific (21-4) in the opening round, falling to Hawaii (10-8) in the quarterfinals, defeating San Diego State (7-5) in the semifinals and topping Arizona State (7-6) for fifth place.
