BERKELEY - The No. 5 Cal women's water polo team will take a week off from Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play to host Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears have already faced the Crimson once this season, defeating them 14-5 last month at the Princeton Invitational. The Bears have lost three in a row, all to teams ranked in the top-4 in the nation. Senior All-American Emily Csikos continues to lead Cal with 38 goals on the season.
Cal Vs. Harvard
The Bears are 2-0 all-time against the Crimson, including a 14-5 victory earlier this season at the Princeton Invitational. In that match, Emily Csikos had five goals to lead Cal while sophomore Tiera Schroeder added two scores. The teams' only other appearance against each other came in 2011, when the Bears beat Harvard 12-4 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Last Time In The Pool
The Bears lost a 10-9 heartbreaker to No. 3 Arizona State at Spieker Aquatics Complex last Saturday. Cal led 9-7 with just under five minutes left but couldn't hold on. Emily Csikos led the Bears with four goals.
Csikos Creeps Up On All-Time Scoring Record
Three-time All-American Emily Csikos is in second place on Cal's all-time scoring list with 205 career goals, putting her seven behind career leader Colette Glinkowski. Csikos has 38 goals this season, and her average of 2.24 goals per match ranks fith in the MPSF.
Vosters Packs A Punch
Senior Breda Vosters has led the Bears in scoring in each of the past two seasons and is once again consistently finding the back of the net this year. Despite missing four matches with a wrist injury, Vosters ranks fourth on the team with 21 goals on the season.
Saturday's match will be the last in an eight-game, seven-day California road trip for the Crimson. Harvard also played Santa Clara, Occidental, Fresno Pacific, UC Davis, Pacific, San Jose State and Stanford.
Heading into the road trip, the Crimson were led by freshman Charlotte Hendrix's 40 goals. Another freshman, Yoshi Anderson, ranks third on the team with 34 goals. Sisters Aisha and Shayna Price have combined for 62 goals this season.
Harvard's Blodgett Pool will be the site of the 2013 NCAA Championships in May.
Cal to Host 2013 MPSF Championships
The 2013 MPSF Championships will take place at the Spieker Aquatics Complex April 26-28. The seven teams from the conference -- six of which are currently ranked in the top-10 in the Collegiate Water Polo top-20 - will converge on Berkeley to try to earn the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The top three finishers at the conference tournament traditionally make the NCAA Tournament field.
