BERKELEY - The No. 4 Cal's women's water polo team faces a strong field at this weekend's Stanford Invitational at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Bears, coming off a 14-7 win over No. 10 Michigan, will play three teams ranked in the top-15 in the nation before finding out who they will play in the championship round. Cal begins play Saturday at Noon against No. 14 Indiana before taking on MPSF rival and third-ranked UCLA at 6:30 p.m. The Bears then meet No. 12 Hawaii on Sunday morning. Their final match Sunday afternoon will depend on their placing in their bracket.
Vosters, Young Provide Punch
Senior Breda Vosters and junior Ashley Young have provided the scoring punch through the first two matches of the season. The teammates are tied for the Cal lead with five goals on the season. Vosters and Young both had three goals during Saturday's 14-7 win over No. 10 Michigan at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Vosters has led the Bears in scoring in each of the past two seasons and was named an All-American each time. Young was a third team All-American as a freshman in 2011.
Csikos Returns
Senior Emily Csikos is back in the pool this season for the Bears after sitting out the 2012 campaign to train with the Canadian National Team. Csikos, a three-time All-American, ranks fifth on Cal's career scoring list with 168 goals and needs 54 to become the Bears' all-time leader. She scored 10 goals in five matches for Team Canada during last year's Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Savanna's Saves
Sophomore Savanna Smith has been strong in goal so far in her first season as the Bears' No. 1 goalie. She is averaging 10.5 saves per match, including 16 during Saturday's win over Michigan.
About The Stanford Invitational
All eight schools in the field are ranked in this week's CWPA top-20
The Bears are in the `B' bracket along with Indiana, UCLA and Hawaii. The `A' bracket consists of Stanford, San Jose State, UC Davis and Hartwick College.
The championship match will feature the winner of each bracket.
Next Week In The Pool
The Bears will travel to their second straight tournament when they make the cross-country trip for the Princeton Invitational. Cal will play No. 10 Princeton on Friday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. PT then play three matches on Saturday, Feb. 9 - against Harvard at 7:30 a.m., George Washington at 10:30 a.m. and Villanova at 1:30 p.m.
