LOS ANGELES, Calif.- After defeating No. 15 Indiana, 7-0, and No. 7 USC, 7-3, the No. 3 California Golden Bears women's water polo team (26-5) next face Stanford at 5 p.m. Saturday in the semifinal round of the National Collegiate Championship Tournament hosted by USC.
The Bears began the tournament on Friday morning at 9 a.m. defeating Indiana to earn their first shutout of the season. The offense, lead by sophomore Heather Petri who tallied a total of three goals during the match, scored the majority of its goals in the first half. With a 5-0 lead going into the second half, the Bears then added one more goal in both the third and fourth quarters to seal the Cal 7-0 victory. The Cal offense outshot Indiana, 24-3, and the defense was lead by junior goalkeeper Evi Schueller who totaled three saves.
At 6:20 p.m. that day, the Bears faced the USC Trojans. Cal once again dominated its opponent, outscoring the Trojans in three of four quarters for a 7-3 win. After holding off the Trojans, the Bears finished first in their bracket, and Cal offensive power Alisa vonHartitzsch earned a team high of four goals at the end of the day.
