IRVINE, CALIF. - Behind two goals apiece from senior Katie Card, junior Elsie Windes and freshman Stephanie Schnugg, the No.6-ranked California women's water polo team defeated San Diego State, 7-5, Saturday in the consolation bracket of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championship, played at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine. The Golden Bears, 17-9, will now face Arizona State in the fifth-place match at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Sun Devils had defeated host UC Irvine, 13-12 in overtime.
Stacy Werner led all scorers with three goals for the Aztecs. Besides Card, Windes and Schnugg's goals, sophomore Molly Hayes added a goal for the Bears. Cal pulled away from a 3-3 tie after three periods by outscoring San Diego State, 4-2, in the final period for the 7-5 win. Sophomore Heather Stuart finished with five saves for the Bears.
