Led by junior Molly Hayes' two goals, the No. 6-ranked California women's water polo team placed ninth at the 2007 MPSF Tournament with a 9-8 victory over host Arizona State Sunday at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The Golden Bears improved their record to 12-11 overall, and the Sun Devils fell to 14-14.Cal had built an 8-6 lead after three quarters and held on in a tight contest to defeat ASU. The Bears had jumped out to an early 4-2 lead through the first period before the Sun Devils tied it at the half, 5-5, with a three goal output in the second period.
The third period proved to be the difference as three different Bears - freshman Julie Oreglia, Hayes, and freshman Grace Reynolds - scored in the stanza to lead Cal to the ninth place tournament finish. Hayes was the leading scorer for the Bears with two goals, but seven other Cal players notched goals, while the Sun Devils were led by two-goal showings from both Addison Doud and Amanda Stepp. The Bear goalie duo of sophomore Lauren Burke (four) and junior Heather Stuart (seven) combined for 11 stops, while Caylinn Wallace had 10 in the loss.
