IRVINE, CALIF. - Paced by sophomore Rebecca Dreyfuss' five goals, the No. 6-ranked California women's water polo team dominated Pacific, 21-4, in the opening match of the 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championship Thursday at Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine. The Golden Bears, who are the No. 4-seeded team in the tournament, improved to 16-8 and have won 11 of their last 12 matches. The Tigers fell to 0-22.
Cal jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first period and never looked back, owning an 11-1 halftime lead and outscoring UOP, 10-3, in the second half. Besides Dreyfuss' five goals, other top scorers for the Bears were sophomore Vanessa Lindsey and senior Holly Farlin with three goals apiece, and freshmen Stephanie Schnugg and Paige Lorenz with two goals each. Pacific goalkeeper Sara Mirels had eight saves for Pacific, while sophomore Heather Stuart had five saves for Cal.
The Bears will next play No. 4-ranked Hawaii, a 13-5 victor over Cal State Northridge, in the MPSF Championship second round, Friday, Apr. 28 at 4:15 p.m. at Anteater Aquatics Complex. Cal and Hawaii have split its two matches this season, with the Bears winning, 8-6, Feb. 10 in an MPSF match at Spieker Aquatics Complex, and the Wahines winning, 8-7, in the third round of the Stanford Invitational, Feb. 12.
