TEMPE, ARIZ. - Despite a four-goal effort from freshman Julie Oreglia, the No. 6-ranked (seeded seventh in the MPSF Tournament) California women's water polo team was upended, 12-9, by 10th-seed Long Beach State in the opening day of the MPSF Tournament Thursday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on the Arizona State campus in Tempe. The young Golden Bears, whose only senior is All-American Elsie Windes, fell to 10-11 overall and will now play Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Apr. 28 at 10:20 a.m. CS Northridge had fallen to San Jose State, 12-9, in an earlier tournament match. Long Beach State (8-16), who was defeated, 13-10, by Cal in a Mar.11 MPSF league match in Long Beach, will now play defending national champion UCLA on Friday. The Bears had battled to get within 7-6 at halftime, outscoring the 49ers, 4-3, in the second period. A solid second half of defense provided the key to victory for Long Beach State as it limited Cal to three goals in the second half, all three of which came in the fourth quarter. Marina Canetti had four goals for the 49ers, including two in the deciding third stanza, while also recording several steals. Keala O'Sullivan, Christina Wensman, Megan Winchell each chipped in a pair of goals for LBSU, while Oreglia led the Bears with her four goals. Freshman Darby Anderson added three goals and freshman Grace Reynolds chipped in the two other goals for Cal. Long Beach State goalie Kim Hayes finished with seven saves, while Heather Stuart and Lauren Burke had four saves apiece for the Bears. Teams 1 2 3 4 Cal 2 4 0 3 - 9 LBSU 4 3 3 2 - 12
