STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 3 California Golden Bears women's water polo team (21-4, 11-3 in MPSF) defeated the No. 5 San Diego State Aztecs (17-11) by a score of 10-9, earning third place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Sunday. The Bears also came away from the tournament with an All-Tournament Team player - senior Alisa vonHartitzsch - and two players with Honorable Mention - senior Karen Cook and sophomore Colette Glinkowski.
In the first round of the tournament, the Bears tackled the No. 7 USC Trojans Friday morning at 11:45 a.m. The score was tied 1-1 going into the second quarter, but Cal pulled ahead scoring three goals to give the Bears a 4-1 lead going into the half. Cal again outscored the Trojans 4-1 in the third quarter to give the Bears an 8-2 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Trojans cut a six-goal third quarter deficit to three goals, falling to the Bears with a final score of 9-6. Glinkowski led the Bears with three goals in the match, while junior goalkeeper Evi Schueller totaled 6 saves.
Cal then faced No. 20 Long Beach State at 4:45 p.m. that afternoon. The Bears led the 49ers 9-1 going into the second half of the match and then scored another nine goals to make the final score 18-2. Fifteen different Cal players found the back of the net during the match, and sophomore Cal goalkeeper Fana Fuqua tallied 5 saves.
On Saturday at 11:45 a.m., Cal next took on the No. 4 Rainbows of Hawaii in a back and forth match that featured five ties and four lead changes. Cal finally took the lead against Hawaii after junior Kaliya Young scored with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter. Alisa vonHartitzsch's third goal with 1:50 left in the match sealed the win for Cal. Scheuller also helped the Bears with eight saves.
Cal then played the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal in Saturday's final match at 7:15 p.m. Stanford led the Bears with a 5-1 lead going into the half, scoring the majority of Cardinal goals in the second quarter. Stanford continued to dominate the match, scoring an additional goal in the last quarter to secure a 6-1 victory.
On Sunday, the final day of tournament play, Cal defeated No. 5 San Diego State, 10-9, for a MPSF third place finish. After taking an early first quarter lead, San Diego State was then outscored 3-1 by Cal in the second quarter, which gave Cal a 5-3 edge going into the half. The Bears and the Aztecs both scored three goals in the third quarter, but the Aztec's 3 goals to Cal's 2 goals scored in the fourth quarter were not enough to pull them ahead. Alisa vonHartitzsch tallied a tournament single match high of five goals for the Cal 10-9 victory over the Aztecs. Alisa also scored a Cal team high of 11 goals throughout tournament play.
The Bears will next travel to Stanford, CA Friday-Sunday, April 24-26 for the National Qualifying Tournament.
