No. 3 Women's Water Polo Splits in Second Round of MPSF Championship

STOCKTON, Calif. - The California Golden Bears women's water polo team (20-4 overall, 10-3 in MPSF) defeated the University of Hawaii, 8-7, but fell to Stanford, 6-1, in the second round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament on Saturday. The Bears will next face San Diego State for third place on Sunday at 12:15 p.m.

In a back and forth match that featured five ties and four lead changes, Cal took the lead against the Hawaii Rainbows after junior Kaliya Young scored with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter. Senior Alisa vonHartitzsch's third goal with 1:50 left in the match sealed the win for Cal. Junior goalkeeper Evi Scheuller also helped the Bears with eight saves against the Rainbows.

In the final match of the day, Stanford led the Bears with a 5-1 lead going into the half, scoring the majority of the Cardinal goals in the second quarter. Stanford continued to dominate the match, scoring an additional goal in the last quarter to secure a 6-1 victory. Stanford will face UCLA for the championship Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
