STOCKTON, Calif. - In the first round at the MPSF Championship, the No. 3 ranked California Golden Bears women's water polo team defeated the No. 7 USC Trojans with a score of 9-6 and the No. 20 Long Beach State 49ers with a score of 18-2. The Bears jump to a 19-3 record overall (9-2 in MPSF), while the Trojans fall to 14-12 (4-7 in MPSF) and the 49ers to 3-19 (0-11 in MPSF).
The Bears tackled the Trojans first on Friday morning at 11:45 a.m. The score was tied 1-1 going into t he second quarter, but Cal pulled ahead scoring three goals to give the Bears a 4-1 lead going into the half. Cal again outscored the Trojans 4-1 in the third quarter to give the Bears an 8-2 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Trojans cut a six-goal third quarter deficit to three goals, falling to the Bears with a final score of 9-6. Sophomore Colette Glinkowski led the Bears with three goals in the match, while junior goalkeeper Evi Schueller totaled 6 saves.
Cal then faced Long Beach State at 4:45 p.m. that afternoon. The Bears led the 49ers 9-1 going into the second half of the match and then scored another nine goals to make the final score 18-2. Fifteen different Cal players found the back of the net during the match, and sophomore Cal goalkeeper Fana Fuqua tallied 5 saves.
Cal will next face Hawaii at 11:45 a.m. and Stanford at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday.
