SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -The No. 3-ranked Cal women's water polo team won two matches today (March 13), defeating No. 14 San Diego State, 10-4, in a morning MPSF league match, before topping No. 20 Princeton, 13-4, in the afternoon as part of the Aztec Invitational. Against the Aztecs, the Golden Bears were paced by senior Stephanie Schnugg's three goals, while against the Tigers from the Ivy League, Cal was led by three goals apiece from senior Meghan Corso and sophomore Elizaberh McLaren. The Bears improved to 16-5 overall and 3-2 in league.
Versus Princeton, Cal had held an 8-3 lead entering the fourth period before putting the contest out of reach by outscoring the Tigers, 5-1, in the final quarter. Besides the scoring of Corso and McLaren, freshmen Taylor Dodson and Kirsten Mase added two goals each. Seniors Camille Hewko and Schnugg, plus freshman Dana Ochsner, also tallied goals for the Bears. Sophomore goalie Stephanie Peckham notched nine saves for the Bears.
In the morning match against San Diego State, Cal jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period and showed balanced scoring for the contest. The Bears had seven different players recorded goals, including two goals by Hewko and single goals by seniors Remy Champion, Corso, Julie Oreglia and Erin Scully, and sophomore standout Emily Csikos. Peckham was stellar in the goal, tallying 16 saves.
Csikos leads the Bears, and the MPSF, with 50 goals in 20 matches. Hewko is second on the squad with 27 goals.
Cal will play two more matches Sunday, March 14 at the Aztec Invitational, facing Marist at 9:15 a.m. and Maryland at 3:30 p.m.
