IRVINE, CALIF. -Sophomore Ashley Young notched three goals to lead No. 4 California (14-4), but the Golden Bears still fell to No. 2-ranked USC, 9-6, in the third-place match of the UCI Invitational Sunday (Feb. 26) at Anteater Pool. Cal fell behind 3-1 after the first period, and then played even with the Trojans in the second and third periods with both teams scoring five goals. Finally, USC shut out the Bears in the fourth quarter for the final 9-6 margin.
Young tied for a match-high with her three goals, while senior Elizabeth McLaren, junior Breda Vosters and sophomore Jennifer Talbott also scored for the Bears. Cal junior goalie Lindsay Dorst finished with seven saves.
The Bears had defeated UC Santa Barbara, 7-3, and Arizona State, 8-5, on Saturday, before falling to No. 1-ranked Stanford, 13-5, in Sunday's semifinal.
It was the second time this season Cal has finished fourth in a major tournament, losing to the Trojans, 10-5, Feb. 5 at the Stanford Invitational. The Bears, however, are 2-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with victories over Hawaii and San Jose State.

The Bears next host UC Irvine in a non-conference match on Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal is 6-0 at home this season.
