IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team split a pair of matches during the first day of the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday.
The Bears began the tournament by defeating No. 16 Loyola Marymount, 9-5. Senior Breda Vosters and sophomore Tiera Schroeder led Cal with two goals apiece. Emily Csikos, Ashley Young, Kirstn Mase, Sierra Smiley and Remington Price also scored for the Bears. Goalie Savanna Smith made six saves.
In their second match of the day, Cal was edged by No. 5 Arizona State, 8-7. The match was tied at 7-7 heading into the fourth period but the Sun Devils scored once for the game-winner. Csikos and Young scored two goals each against ASU. Schroeder, Vosters and Dana Ochsner also registered goals for the Bears. Smith had three saves.
The Bears (10-2) will play two more matches at the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday. The action will begin at 9:15 a.m. when Cal plays the host and sixth-ranked UC Irvine. The Bears will then play either San Diego State or Hawaii in the afternoon.
