SAN JOSE, CALIF. - Despite four goals from senior All-American Elsie Windes and three goals from freshman standout Grace Reynolds, the No. 4-ranked Cal women's water polo team (3-3) fell to No. 8 San Jose State, 14-13 in overtime, Saturday at the Aquatics Center in San Jose. The Spartans improved to 3-4 and were led by senior Deanna Lowry's four goals and 12 saves from junior Kendra Adama.

Lowry scored the game-winning goal with 0:44 remaining in the first overtime period. The goal came on a man-up advantage for the Spartans.

San Jose State senior Beth Harberts tallied the first goal of the match, but Cal responded quickly with a goal less than a minute later by Windes. At the 5:14 mark, Geraldine Hazlett scored for the Spartans, giving SJSU a 2-1 advantage. Cal took little time to retaliate with its second goal of the game at 4:40. Juliet Moss helped to regain the lead for SJSU at 3:09, but the Bears' Paige Lorenz tied the match at 3-3 to end of the first quarter.

In the second stanza, San Jose scored three goals to take the lead, 6-5. Lowry scored her two goals in the quarter and Lex Higlett notched a goal to help the Spartans take the lead.

San Jose notched six goals in the third quarter, two of which were scored by Higlett. The first goal of the period was by Lowry at 7:33. Higlett followed with her second goal at 7:00 to bring the Spartans' lead to 8-5. In the final 1:39 of the quarter, SJSU's Brianna Lindsey (who played at Cal in 2005) tallied two goals to give the Spartans a 12-9 lead. Both of her goals came on man-advantage plays.

In the fourth quarter Cal rallied to tie the match at 13 at the end of regulation. The Bears scored three goals in the quarter. Freshman Darby Anderson tallied the first score at 3:38 to cut SJSU's lead to 12-10. Freshman Camille Hewko followed with a goal at 2:40 to cut the lead to within one before Windes scored the tying goal at 1:49.

Lindsey regained the lead for the Spartans at 1:23, but the lead would not last as Cal junior Molly Hayes skipped the ball into the back of the cage with just 0:13 remaining to send the match into overtime.

The Bears went on to take five shots within the two three-minute overtime periods. Adama made two saves, the Spartan defense had two blocks and the side bar deflected one to help SJSU earn the win.

Cal will next host defending national champion UCLA on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
