The No. 3-ranked California women's water polo team went 1-1 Saturday (Feb. 5) during the first day of action of the 2011 Stanford Invitational, falling to No. 1-ranked Stanford, 10-5, in an evening match after defeating No. 8 San Jose State, 14-10, in a morning contest. The Golden Bears' loss to the top-ranked Cardinal was their first loss of the season to drop to 8-1.

Five different players scored for Cal in its second match of the day - freshmen Kelly Mendoza and Ashley Young, sophomore Kirsten Mase and juniors Jessica Robinson and Katie Monton.

Sophomore goalie Lindsay Dorst recorded nine saves for the Bears in the Stanford match.

Earlier in the day against San Jose State, junior All-American Emily Csikos and sophomores Dana Ochsner and Breda Vosters scored three goals apiece.

Cal's match against the Spartans was the first action of the season for team captains Csikos and goalie Stephanie Peckham, who had been nursing minor injuries.

The Bears survived a scare from the Spartans (6-4), as Cal took its final lead of the match following a flurry of goals, including five goals in the last 90 seconds of the contest. SJSU had briefly tied the match, 8-8, on a Timi Molnar penalty shot, before the Bears recaptured the lead, 11-9, on an Ochsner score, followed by a Csikos goal to end the third quarter.

San Jose State had jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead, before Cal was able to catch the Spartans midway through the second quarter as Vosters scored, followed by another goal from Mendoza gave the Bears a 5-4 advantage.

Cal will next play No. 8-ranked Arizona State at 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 6 in day two of the Stanford Invitational. The Bears' following match will be determined in accordance to how they finished in pool play.
