STANFORD, CALIF. - Led by sophomore Ashley Young's match-high four goals, the No. 2-ranked Cal women's water polo team recovered from its first loss of the season Saturday by defeating Hawaii, 8-4, Sunday morning (Feb. 5) at the Stanford Invitational at the Avery Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears, who are now 11-1 on the season, will next play No. 3-ranked USC at 3:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the tournament's third-place match.Besides Young's impressive offensive output, junior Breda Vosters added two goals and sophomore Kelly Mendoza and freshman Victoria Williams each scored for Cal. Junior goalie Lindsay Dorst finished with eight saves. The Bears had earlier defeated the Wahines, 8-5, Thursday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. On Saturday, Cal had opened the Stanford Invitational with a 9-7 victory over Michigan. The Bears then fell to No. 4-ranked UCLA, 4-3, Saturday evening. USC will play in the third-place match as a result of defeating San Jose State, 14-6, but losing to host Stanford, 8-7, on Saturday. It will be the first time Cal has played the Trojans this season.
