BERKELEY -The No. 3-ranked Cal women's water polo team (5-0), led by sophomore Kirsten Mase's three goals and two goals apiece from junior Elizabeth McLaren and sophomore Breda Vosters, defeated No. 16-ranked Pacific, 12-6, Saturday (Jan. 29) at the Spartan Invitational in San Jose.
Earlier in the day, the Golden Bears had defeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 18-1, in a morning match. On the season, coach Richard Corso squad has outscored its opponents, 85-20.
Against the Tigers, Cal jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period and controlled the contest from that point on, tallying up a 9-2 lead at halftime. Besides the goals from Mase, McLaren and Vosters; the Bears also got scores from freshman Kelly Mendoza, sophomore Dana Ochsner, sophomore Remington Price and freshmen Emily Turner and Ashley Young.
In the CS Monterey Bay contest, Cal was led by Vosters' career-high five goals. Price continued her strong scoring this season with three goals in the morning match, while sophomores Taylor Dodson and Ochsner had two goals apiece. Price leads Cal in scoring this season with 13 goals in five matches. Ochsner, who was a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Freshman Team last season, is second on the squad in scoring with 11 goals.
Sophomore goalie Lindsay Dorst had five saves in two quarters of work for the Bears against CS Monterey Bay, and freshman Kristen Stern added three saves. Against UOP, Dorst notched four saves and Stern had one save.
