BERKELEY -

In its tightest match of the season, the No. 2-ranked Cal women's water polo team was led by junior Breda Vosters' four goals, and a key goal by senior Elizabeth McLaren with 1:58 left in the contest, upending Loyola Marymount, 8-6, Saturday during the Cal Speedo Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

The Golden Bears improved to 7-0 on the season and will conclude the Cal Speedo Invitational with a 7:30 p.m. match Saturday versus Cal State Monterey Bay. On Friday, Cal had defeated Pomona, 21-4, and Cal Baptist, 14-6.

The Bears' match against LMU became close when the Lions' Whitney Delgado scored with 49 seconds left in the third period and then scored again with 3:12 left in the match to get her team within 7-6. But McLaren was able to make the clinching shot towards the end of the match. Junior Dana Ochsner was able to block a Lions' pass into two-meters, which set up a Bears' counter-attack and allowed McLaren to give Cal the two goal cushion.

Besides Vosters' four goals, and McLaren's goal, sophomore Ashley Young scored twice for the Bears and freshman Tiera Schroeder also tallied a goal for Richard Corso's squad.

The Bears are hosting the eight-team California Speedo Invitational, Jan. 27-28 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. There will be 11 matches during the Speedo Invitational with no tournament champion. Click here for the tournament schedule and results 2012 California Speedo Invitational
