BERKELEY - The No. 2-ranked Cal women's water polo team showed a potent offense Friday night (Jan. 27) defeating Cal Baptist, 14-6, behind three goals apiece from senior Jessica Robinson and freshman Victoria Williams. The Golden Bears had earlier defeated Pomona, 21-4, in the opening match of the Speedo Invitational at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex, to outscore their opponents, 35-10, Friday and improve to 6-0 on the season.In the Cal Baptist contest, Cal scored four goals in each of the first three quarters to give itself a comfortable cushion. Besides the three goals apiece from Robinson and Williams, freshman Chris Baker scored two goals and six other Bears had single goals. In the big win over Pomona, Cal was led by junior Jennifer Docto's career-high five goals. Eleven different players scored for the Bears, including two goals apiece from freshmen Williams, Baker and Melissa Hale; and sophomores Alexandra Hill, Emily Turner and Jennifer Talbott. Junior goalie Lindsay Dorst had five saves versus both Pomona and Cal Baptist. Cal will next play No. 11-ranked Loyola Marymount at 3 p.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay at 7:30 p.m. during the second day of the California Speedo Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 28. The Bears are hosting the eight-team California Speedo Invitational, Jan. 27-28 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. There will be 11 matches during the Speedo Invitational with no tournament champion.
