NOTING THE BEARS: The California women's water polo team (5-1) finished second at the UC San Diego Tournament, Feb. 14-16 in San Diego. The Bears defeated UC Santa Barbara, 9-4; USC, 11-4; UCLA, 4-3; San Diego State, 12-9, and fell to defending national champion UCLA, 8-5 in the tournament's title match. Cal had defeated UC San Diego, 18-3, prior to the tournament on Feb. 13.

HEAD COACH MAUREEN O'TOOLE: Maureen O'Toole is in her second year as Cal's head women's water polo coach with a 37-7 (.841) record. Last season, O'Toole led her squad to a 32-6 record and a second place national finished. She was named both Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Northern Division Coach of the Year and Women's Collegiate I Division Coach of the Year by the American Water Polo Coaches Association. As a player, O'Toole is a 15-time MVP of the U.S. National Championships, a six-time world MVP and is a four-time national Sportswomen of the Year as named by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

NOTING UC DAVIS, UCSB TOURNAMENT: The UC Davis Aggies are currently 2-3 overall and placed sixth at the UC San Diego Tournament. The Aggies lost to Stanford, 7-4; lost to San Diego State, 9-7; defeated UC San Diego, 3-0; defeated USC, 4-3 and lost to UC Santa Barbara, 7-5 in the fifth place match. UC Davis' leading scorer is freshman Alice Wallace with eight goals. Last season, Cal was 6-1 versus the Aggies, including defeating UC Davis, 8-2, in the second round of the National Championship Tournament in Davis, CA. The UC Santa Barbara Tournament will consist of 12 teams in four brackets--Pool A: Cal, Michigan, USC. Pool B: Stanford, UC San Diego, Redlands. Pool C: UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, Claremont. Pool D is club teams Shores, Golden West and Merced. If the Bears win Pool A, they will play the winner of Pool C. Last season, Cal won the UCSB Tournament, defeating San Diego State, 7-5, in the championship match. CAL PLAYER NOTES: So far this season, the Bears have been led by sisters Alisa and Melanie von Hartitzsch (Tulsa, OK). Alisa, a junior transfer from Brown, has been a scoring machine for Cal tallying 17 goals in six matches. She has led the Bears in scoring in five-of-six matches and had five goals versus USC and 16 goals total in the UC San Diego Tournament. Melanie, a sophomore driver, is Cal's second leading scorer with eight goals and sophomore two-meter Kailya Young (Vancouver, British Columbia) is third on the team in scoring with seven goals. Young was the Bears leading scorer last year as a freshman with 85 points and was a first team All-America selection. Besides Young, other returning players who earned honors last season include sophomore goalie Evi Schueller (Mountain View, CA), who was second team All-America; senior driver Karen Cook (Foster City, CA) who was third team All-America and MPSF Northern Division First Team; and Melanie von Hartitzsch, who was a MPSF Northern Division First Team selection. Junior Alicia Razzari (Merced, CA), earned second team MPSF honors. In its first season as a varsity sport, the Cal's women's water polo team finished 32-6 overall in 1996 and fell to UCLA, 8-4, in the final of the Collegiate Women's Water Polo National Championships. The Bears Courtney Johnson was named MPSF Northern Division Player of the Year and was a first team All-America selection.
