California senior outside hitter Angie Pressey was named as the volleyball selection for the inaugural Toyo Tires Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award by the Toyo Tire (U.S.A.) Corporation today. Working with the Pac-10 Conference, the company established awards to honor collegiate student-athletes that have made significant contributions to both their sport and academic discipline. A Scholar-Athlete of the Year award will be given to one student-athlete in each of the Pac-10's 22 sponsored sports. Eligible student-athletes include seniors on track to receive a degree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher who have been at their institution for more than a year and participate in at least 50% of the scheduled contests in their particular sport.

As one of the Toyo Tires Pac-10 Scholar Athletes of the Year, Pressey will receive a commemorative award and the Toyo Tire Corporation will donate $1,000 to the scholarship fund of Cal's athletic department. The nomination and awarding process will continue until May 2008. Pressey joins Arizona's Spencer Larsen (Football), Washington's Kevin Forrest (Men's Soccer), Neftalem Araia of Stanford (Men's Cross Country), Rachel Buehler of Stanford (Women's Soccer) and Arianna Lambie of Stanford (Women's Cross Country) as the recipients of this wave of awards. In addition to the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, Toyo is also a proud sponsor of Pac-10 men's basketball.

Pressey is one of five Cal All-American volleyball players, named to the first team earlier this week. She was also named to the Pac-10 All-Conference Team for the fourth consecutive year this season, averaging 4.19 kills per game and logging 13 double-double performances as a senior for the Bears. Pressey has moved up on the all-time records list for total career kills, to third with 1,710. She is also third all-time at Cal for career attempts with 4,176 and is just four digs shy of moving into a tie for sixth all-time for total career digs (1,164).

Pressey was named to All-Tournament Teams at the Cal Molten Classic (MVP), the Golden Bear Invitational and the Colorado Invitational this season. Her contributions to Cal's wins in the Wisconsin Regional of the 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament earned her All-Region team honors. This week, she was also selected as the CVU.com National Player of the Week. Pressey has also impressed in the classroom, landing her on the Pac-10 All-Academic Team and on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District Eight Team. She will be trying out with the 2008 USA Volleyball team the upcoming spring.

The Golden Bears have put together an impressive postseason run with the help of Pressey, reaching the NCAA Championship National Semifinal. The No. 6 Golden Bears will face No. 1 Penn State in an 8 p.m. (PST) match on Thursday, Dec. 13. The match will be broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN2. Please check your local listings.
