BERKELEY - Kristen Kathan helped lead the Golden Bears to two victories in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship over the weekend, making the senior libero the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week. Cal defeated Lipscomb (3-0) in the first round before taking out host Ohio State (3-1) in the second round to advance to its fourth consecutive NCAA regional semifinal match. Kathan led all players in digs in both matches and helped the Bears notch a defensive performance that held their opponents to a .187 attack rate (88k, 44e, 235 att). Kathan had 13 digs against the Bison and logged her sixth 20-plus dig performance of the year against the Buckeyes. For the weekend, Kathan averaged 4.71 dps and added a service ace to give the Bears their school-record fourth-straight season with at least 20 wins.
