BEAR NOTES: The Cal volleyball team (7-10, 3-6 Pac-10) will try to break a four-match losing streak when it travels to face the San Jose State Spartans (18-1) Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. and the No. 6 ranked Stanford Cardinal (14-2, 8-1 Pac-10) Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. This past weekend, the Bears had the opportunity to compete in the first athletic event hosted in the new Haas Pavilion (prior to men's and women's basketball's Midnight Madness), when they took on Arizona State Oct. 15. Cal lost to the Sun Devils, 3-1 (15-11, 15-6, 15-13, 15-9), but had a crowd of 3,125, the largest crowd ever for a Bear home volleyball match and the largest crowd Cal has played in front of since facing Hawaii before 6,601 Sept. 14, 1996 (lost 3-0) in Honolulu. The following night, Oct. 16, the Bears played in front of a crowd of 420 in Haas Pavilion in a 3-0 loss to No. 18 Arizona (15-10, 15-3, 15-10). Outside hitter Brook Coulter is having an outstanding senior campaign as she is the team leader in kills (210), digs (210) and service aces (30), and is now on the Cal Top 10 career list in four categories. Coulter made school history with seven service aces Oct. 25 versus Utah, putting her first on Cal's all-time career service ace list (now at 149). She is also eighth in career kill attempts (2645), ninth in career digs (959) and 10th in career kills (836). Other current Bear players who are on the Cal all-time career Top 10 list include senior middle blocker Kelli Alva and sophomore setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee. Alva is fifth on the Cal career total block list (299) and McNamee is third on the career assist list (1651). Junior outside hitter Alicia Perry has racked up some impressive numbers this season as she is second on the team behind Coulter in kills (208) and digs (133). Freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Courtney Guerra leads the Bears in total blocks with 55. Cal has been a strong serving team this season, leading the Pac-10 with an average of 1.84 service aces per game (112 total service aces).
