BEAR NOTES: The 2000 Cal volleyball team (4-3, 1-1) hosts San Jose State, No. 7 ranked UCLA and No. 6 ranked USC this week at the RSF Fieldhouse. The Bears are returning home after opening Pac-10 competition with two long five-game matches last week at Oregon and Oregon State. Cal defeated the Ducks, 3-2 (13-15, 15-11, 16-14, 13-15, 26-24), in a three hour and 15 minute contest, and fell to the Beavers, 3-2 (16-14, 15-10, 14-16, 12-15, 16-14), in a two hour and 55 minute match. The match against Oregon is believed to be the longest match, time-wise, in Bear volleyball history, and the 26-24 fifth game score is believed to be the highest scoring game in Cal history. Three team school records were set by the Bears in Oregon, with 101 team kills and 95 team assists versus Oregon and 277 kill attempts against Oregon State. Senior outside hitter Alicia Perry, selected to all-tournament teams in both the Silver Legacy Invite and the Golden Bear Classic this season, recorded a team-high 57 kills and 47 digs last week. Versus Oregon, Perry posted a career-best 30 kills and 26 digs, including the match winning kill in the 26-24 fifth game. She followed that with 27 kills and 21 digs at Oregon State. Perry leads Cal in both kills (121) and digs (101), and with 1,021 career kills becomes the sixth player in Cal history to record over 1,000 kills. Another standout has been freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy. Abernathy earned all-tournament honors in Nevada after recording 17 kills and 13 digs in her college debut versus the Wolf Pack. Junior setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee and sophomore middle blocker Reena Pardiwala have also excelled. McNamee leads Cal with 260 assists and was selected to the all-tournament team of the Golden Bear Volleyball Classic, recording 52 assists and 11 kills in the two matches. She had her second career triple-double in the season-opener at Nevada with 11 kills, 11 digs and 37 assists. Against Oregon State Sept. 16, McNamee recorded a career-best 73 assists. Pardiwala, who sat out the entire 1999 season with a ruptured disk in her lower back, has been steady this season with a .300 hitting percentage, 58 kills, seven service aces, 57 digs and 25 total blocks. CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: The Bears have an 11-26 all-time record against San Jose State (9-2), but defeated the Spartans, 3-0 (15-8, 15-12, 15-13) in the last meeting Oct. 19, 1999 in San Jose.
