Sept. 11, 2000 BERKELEY, CA - Fri. Sept. 15 at Oregon, McArthur Court, Eugene, OR 7:30 p.m. Sat. Sept. 16 at Oregon State, Gill Coliseum, Corvallis, OR 7 p.m. HEAD COACH RICH FELLER: Rich Feller (16-17 at Cal, career 315-184, .631) is in his second season as the head coach of Cal's women's volleyball program. Feller took over the Bears coaching reins when he was hired in December 1998. He comes to Cal after a stint as an assistant coach on the USA National Team and 14 successful years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96) where he led the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings. Feller earned his 300th career victory when the Bears defeated Denver, 3-1, Sept. 4, 1999. BEAR NOTES: The 2000 Cal volleyball team (3-2) will begin its Pac-10 schedule this Friday at Oregon (televised 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Net) and Saturday at Oregon State. The Bears have already shown signs they could make a strong bid for an NCAA berth this season as Cal has performed well in two early season tournaments, losing only to teams ranked in the Top 20. On Sept. 1-2, Cal placed second at the Silver Legacy/Ray Wersching Invitational in Reno, NV, defeating host Nevada, 3-1, losing to No. 10 ranked Minnesota, 3-0, and topping Kent State, 3-0. Most recently, the Bears placed second in their own Golden Bear Volleyball Classic Sept. 8-9, defeating McNeese State, 3-1, before falling to No. 12 ranked Florida, 3-1. Cal has received solid production from senior outside hitter Alicia Perry, who has been selected to all-tournament teams in both the Silver Legacy Invite and the Golden Bear Classic. During the Golden Bear Classic, Perry recorded 27 kills and had a team-high 33 digs in the two matches. She currently leads Cal in both kills (64) and digs (54). Another standout for the Bears has been freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy. Abernathy earned all-tournament honors in Nevada after having a stellar performance in her collegiate debut against the Wolf Pack, recording 17 kills and 13 digs. Against Florida, Abernathy had a team-high 18 kills. Two more players who have excelled so far in 2000 are junior setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee and sophomore middle blocker Reena Pardiwala. McNamee leads Cal with 125 assists and was selected to the all-tournament team of the Golden Bear Volleyball Classic, recording 52 assists and 11 kills in the two matches. She had her second career triple-double in the season-opener at Nevada with 11 kills, 11 digs and 37 assists. Pardiwala, who sat out the entire 1999 season with a ruptured disk in her lower back, has been steady this season with a .296 hitting percentage, 29 kills, five service aces, 35 digs and 23 total blocks. McNamee is currently third on the Cal all-time assist list with 2044 career assists. The other Bear who is a member of the Bears all-time career Top 10 list is Perry, who is eighth on the career kill list with 964 and ninth with 2646 kill attempts. CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: The Bears have a 30-12 all-time record against Oregon, sweeping the Ducks last season (3-0 Oct 1 at Cal, 3-0 Oct. 28 at Oregon). Oregon is currently 6-1 (host Stanford Sept. 14) and is led by 6-0 senior middle blocker Halie Mazza (89 kills, .446 hitting percentage). Cal has a 25-11 all-time record against Oregon State and has won the last four matches against the Beavers (last season 3-2 Oct. 2 at Cal, 3-0 Oct. 29 at Oregon State). Oregon State is currently 6-1 (host Stanford Sept. 15) and is led by 5-11 junior outside hitter Gina Schmidt (96 kills, .275 hitting percentage). 2000 Player Notes
