BERKELEY -
California volleyball head coach Rich Feller was named Volleyball Magazine's National Coach of the Year in their January 2008 issue. Senior outside hitter Angie Pressey was selected to the Asics/Volleyball Magazine All-American First Team while sophomore outside hitter Hana Cutura received second team honors.
Feller guided the 2007 Golden Bears to the team's best-ever NCAA postseason finish, reaching the championship semifinal match in Sacramento, Calif. The Bears completed the best season in program history with a 26-8 record, and tied a school record by notching a 12-6 finish in conference play. 2007 also marked the fourth time in six years in which Cal has reached the 20-win plateau. On the way, the Bears also set records for hitting percentage in a single match and total team blocks for a season. The national award is a first for Feller who was named the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year in 2003.
Senior outside hitter Angie Pressey receives her second Asics/Volleyball Magazine award this year after being named to the AVCA All-America first team earlier. Pressey is one of only five Cal All-Americans in volleyball and is only the third to be selected for the honor more than once, making the AVCA second team in 2006. Pressey was also named to the 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament Wisconsin Regional All-Tournament Team as she led the Bears into the NCAA Championship Semifinal for the first time in school history. Pressey's performances this season earned her All-Pac-10 Conference recognition for the fourth consecutive year as she was named the Pac-10's first ever Toyo Tires Scholar-Athlete of the Year for volleyball. Pressey completed her career with California as the eighth all-time leader for hitting percentage with a .248 mark and third in total kills with 1,725 and attacks with 4,208.
Sophomore outside hitter Hana Cutura receives her first Asics/Volleyball Magazine recognition after becoming California's fifth AVCA All-American, earning a spot on the second team earlier this season. She also received Pac-10 All-Conference honors and was chosen as the MVP of the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament Wisconsin Regional. Cutura led the team this season with 485 kills and 1,159 total attacks. Her 0.32 service aces per game was also a team best.
