Cal Falls to Sacramento State

BERKELEY CA. - Cal's women's volleyball team could have overlooked Sacramento State in Friday's home opener. After all, Stanford is coming to town on Tuesday, and the Bears hold a 9-1 advantage over Sac State. Make that 9-2.

In a five game thriller at the Recreational Sports Facility, the Bears were beaten by the Hornets 16-18, 15-9, 15-8, 15-6, 15-12. Sacramento improves to 6-3, Cal falls to 5-2, 0-0 in the Pac 10.

After a tight first game, the Bears seemed to be on their way with victories in the second and third games. But in the pivotal fourth, the Bears had nine errors and only nine kills with a hitting percentage of .000. This was the beginning of the end for Cal.

The Bears recieved solid efforts from Jessica Dinaborg, Alicia Perry and Elena Berman, who had 16,15, and 14 kills respectively. Both Perry and Berman had 15 digs as well. Setter Michelle Wickman had five kills to go with her match high 46 assists.

But the Hornets had some sting of their own. Angela Lewis had a team-high 14 kills and 13 digs, and Carissa Buic had 12 kills and 15 digs for Sacramento. Meanwhile, both Rebekah Capel and Korrie Kuelper had a .412 hitting percentage.

Cal opens the Pac 10 season against the Cardinal on September 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the RSF.
