BERKELEY, CA - The No. 21-ranked California women's volleyball team (5-0) won its first match of the sixth annual Golden Bears Invitational, defeating Florida A&M (1-1), 3-0 (30-24, 30-18, 30-18) Thursday evening at Haas Pavilion. Cal was powered by sophomore Angie Pressey's 16 kills, junior setter Samantha Carter's five service aces and 40 assists, and strong hitting performances from senior Jenna Brown and sophomore Ellen Orchard. As a team, the Bears hit .316 for the night, compared to .142 for the Rattlers. Cal also had 10 service aces.
The Bears are 5-0 this season and have won 15-straight games in those five matches.
Besides Pressey's 16 kills, freshman Morgan Beck added 10 kills. Brown and Orchard ended the match with impressive hitting percentages. Brown had nine kills with no errors in 13 attempts (.692), while Orchard had eight kills with only one error in 13 attempts. Junior libero Jillian Davis paced Cal with 14 digs.
The match started off well for the Bears as they recorded five service aces in game one, including three aces by Carter as Florida A&M never got closer than one point, even though the Rattlers had a better hitting percentage (.148 to .158) in Cal's 30-24 win. The Bears hitting improve immensely in game two, as Cal hit .432 (20k, 4e, 37 att) behind Pressey's six kills and six kills with no errors by Orchard to win 30-18. The Bears then ended the match with another 30-18 score in game three, hitting .357 (18k, 3e, 42att) as a team.
Senior Adriana Kostadinova led Florida A&M, a squad that went 28-3 last year, with 11 kills.
The Golden Bear Invitational will continue Friday when No. 20-ranked University of San Diego takes on Florida A&M at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Then on Saturday, Sept. 10, Cal will play host to the University of San Diego at 7 p.m.
