SPIKERS TRAVEL TO THE DESERT The Cal women's volleyball team (7-15, 2-11) hits the road for a pair of Pac-10 matches in the desert this weekend. The Bears travel to 13th-ranked Arizona on Friday, Nov. 7 and to Arizona State on Saturday, Nov. 8. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.

PAC-10 STANDINGS: 1. Stanford, 13-0 Pac-10, 22-2 overall; 2t. Washington State, 9-4, 21-4; 2t. USC, 9-4, 17-4; 2t. Washington, 9-4, 14-8; 5. Arizona, 8-4, 16-4; 6. Oregon State, 5-7, 13-11; 7. UCLA, 5-8, 10-10; 8. Arizona State, 3-9, 12-11; 9. California, 2-11, 7-15; 10. Oregon, 0-12, 8-16.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Arizona is 16-4 overall, and sits in fifth place in the Pac-10 with a 8-4 conference record. The Wildcats, ranked #13 nationally before last weekend's action, defeated #21 Washington and lost to #10 Washington State on the road last weekend. Arizona State is 12-11 overall and in eighth place in the Pac-10 with a 3-9 conference mark, just one game ahead of the Bears. The Sun Devils have lost five of their last six matches since defeating Cal Oct. 10 in Berkeley.

CAL vs. THE OPPONENTS: Arizona leads the series with Cal, 19-6, including a three-game victory in Berkeley Oct. 11 this season. The Bears last victory over Arizona was Oct. 27, 1995 in Tucson, when the Wildcats were ranked #15. That was also Cal's last victory over a ranked opponent. Arizona State leads the series with Cal, 19-8, including eight straight victories. The last Cal win over ASU was a four-game victory Nov. 7, 1992 in Berkeley, and the last Golden Bear win in Tempe was Oct. 9, 1992.

LAST MEETING: The Bears dropped a disappointing five-game match at home against Arizona State Oct. 10, followed by a three-game loss to #15 Arizona Oct. 11. Cal easily won the first two games against ASU, but an injury to leading hitter Jessica Dinaberg in the middle of game three disrupted the Bears tempo and the Sun Devils battled back to win three straight games and the match, 4-15, 7-15, 15-10, 15-12, 15-11. Dinaberg went on to miss four matches, and did not return until the Oct. 25 win at Oregon. Sophomore Brook Coulter led the Bears with 14 kills and 11 digs against the Sun Devils. Against the 15th-ranked Wildcasts, senior Michelle Wickman led the team with 8 kills and 9 digs, and Coulter added 7 kills and 8 digs.

LAST WEEK: The Bears dropped a pair of Pac-10 matches at home against nationally ranked opponents last weekend. On Halloween, #8 USC defeated Cal, 15-7, 17-15, 15-5 and on Nov. 1, the #24 UCLA Bruins downed the Bears, 15-8, 15-8, 15-13. Senior Jessica Dinaberg recorded n a team-high 14 kills and 8 digs against USC, while sophomore Kellie Alva led the team against UCLA with 8 kills and 3 blocks.

DINABERG'S DOUBLE: When senior hitter Jessica Dinaberg put down her 18th kill of the Illinois State Classic during the Tulsa match, she became just the third player in Cal history to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. The other two Bears in the 1,000-1,000 club are Lisa Arce (1987-90) and Tiffany Rochelle (1986-89). Dinaberg now ranks fourth in all-time kills (1128), kill attempts (3274) and digs (1168) at Cal, and has a legitimate shot to move into third place in each category before her career comes to a close in Berkeley.

FIVE-GAME FRUSTRATION: The Bears have had their hands full in five-game matches this season, posting a 2-5 record in matches that go the full distance. After going 1-8 in five-gamers last season, Cal appeared to have found the key to winning the long ones in the early going this season. The Bears not only posted two five-game victories at the Illinois State Classic, but they earned them both in the same day (Sept. 6), knocking off undefeated Tulsa in the morning, and coming back to beat host Illinois State in the evening championship match. But, Cal has struggled since that tournament, dropping five-game matches to Sacramento State, New Mexico, Oregon State Sept.. 27, #21 UCLA Oct. 3 and Arizona State Oct. 10.

HEAD COACH SUE WOODSTRA: Sue Woodstra is in her third year at the helm of the Golden Bears, with a record of 28-50 at Cal. A two-time U.S. Olympic team member and one of nine Olympians to currently head a women's collegiate volleyball team, Woodstra has posted a 138-89 record in six seasons as a collegiate head coach, including four years at Pittsburgh. Her assistant coaches are Oscar Crespo, Stephanie Shrieve and Ed Cohen.
